Flashback – Albania in the 1990s

Photo Exhibition September 25 – October 9, 2020, Galerie Centrum, Glacisstraße 9 (Ecke Attemsgasse)

The exhibition Flashback – Albania in the 1990s addresses the turbulent transition from communist dictatorship to a free-market democracy. Hardly any other former socialist country has been as deeply affected by this transformation as Albania. Economic decay, mass migration and temporary collapse of the state order mark those years. The 1990s, however, were also characterised by an irrepressible strive for change and a desire to live in freedom. The pictures at the exhibition give an insight into different facets of everyday life in the mountains, on the coast and in the cities. The exhibition also addresses ambiguous memories of this time and the complexities in dealing with its visual representation.
